Through Eyes of Faith: Holy Cross Peru

For years, colleges associated with the Congregation of Holy Cross have traveled to Lima, Peru to experience that ancient culture and the incredible work of the Priests, Brothers and Sisters there. Now, Holy Cross College has joined along. The trip to Peru is a 3 credit course that fulfills the International Experience requirement of the B.A. program.

About the trip

Our eyes of faith will see spectacular things. The Congregation of Holy Cross in Peru operates one of the largest parishes in the entire world — over 250,000 people! It serves several villages where the poor build higher and higher up, where others don't want to live. But Holy Cross is there.

Here are a couple pictures of the Peyton Center where we stay. Yes, it is very nice, definitely nicer than almost all accommodations in Peru and better than most places in the States as well! Students may feel even that it is too nice, but remember that we are there to serve, and so not having to worry about a clean, safe place to eat, shower and rest is a good thing. Also, fyi, the emergency contact where we stay is:

Fr. Bob Baker, CSC
Congregation of Holy Cross
Tel: 011-511-387-5329

011-511-387-4453
011-511-387-1472

Also, Holy Cross runs a school for poor children that has become a model throughout South America. It is called Fe y Alegria (Faith and Joy). We will work at this school, helping to teach the kids and doing landscaping to beautify the campus.

Another ministry is for some of the many persons born with severe birth defects. We will help the speech and physical therapists, even as they travel to homes of the poorest of the poor who cannot afford the bus trip to the clinic.

Most of all, we travel to Peru simply to encounter the people of that beautiful land, to discover their joys and hopes, their griefs and anxieties. In so doing, we learn a lot about ourselves and the borders of our world inevitably expand.
